It may start with small things here and there at work that have grown into big things over time. Or maybe you’ve just never been passionate about what you’re doing. But how do you know when it’s time to pull the plug on your current job?

Making that decision isn’t easy or clear cut. There often isn’t one grand moment that hits you like lightning telling you that now is the time to change careers. However, there are a few signs that signal it’s time to switch careers.

Energy depletion

It’s common to feel a bit of drag going into work or feeling tired at the end of the day. If you find it takes an amazing act of willpower to get out of bed, and go to work every day, then it’s a clear sign that your work situation could use a change.

If you feel tired before, during, and after each day, take an inventory of the things that make you feel that way. Is it your work culture, your job tasks, maybe your boss? The answer to this question will help you discover what it is you are looking for in a new career.

Apathy

Do you care about your job; is your heart just not in it? Not every part of your job needs to excite you but your job should make you feel like your learning and growing. However, if you’re on autopilot at work, or unconcerned with your quality of work, then it’s time to find something you care about.

Passion is one of the biggest motivators for career changers. What excites you? What are your hobbies? Once you know that, you can find careers that better align with your interests.

Feeling unappreciated and underutilized

Being seen and being heard at work are important things for everyone. Melinda Fouts, Ph.D, Success Starts with You, puts it best:

“When you don’t feel your input is valued, then your work can become less fulfilling. These two issues are clear signs it’s time to make a change in your present situation. One of the underlying components of healthy relationships is about being appreciated. If you do not feel your contributions at work are important, recognized, and respected, you might want to consider moving on.”

Quoted in Forbes: Clear cut signs it’s time for you to change your job

If any of these are common themes in your life, now is a good time to reassess your choices. Once you know what excites you, what you care about, and how you want to continue growing as a person and a professional, find the tools you need to make it happen.
