The Modern CIO
This unique 12-month certification program is designed for the Modern CIO in the Federal Government, focusing on a holistic blend of business, technology, and customer-centric perspectives.
Program Overview
- Duration: 12 months
- Format: Hybrid
- In-person: Kick-off week, Quarterly Sessions, Final Presentation Week
- Online: weekly and monthly synchronous sessions; other learning will be asynchronous on a dedicated channel platform
- Learning Hours: 300 hours (4 hours per week, including asynchronous learning)
- Hands-on Activities: 50 hours (included in the total learning hours)
- Assessments: Discussions, hands-on activities, submissions, and the capstone project presentation
- Immersive Sessions:
- Kickoff Week: 3-day offsite at UMBC facilities (~25 hours)
- Weekly – Topic Sync: 2-hour online live synchronous session (~50 hours)
- Monthly – Module Sync: 4-hour online live synchronous session (~50 hours)
- Graduation Week: 3-day offsite at UMBC facilities (~25 hours)

- Advanced Support: You will have access to a senior mentor with monthly office hours and a junior associate to help with your presentations, reports and ad-hoc support needs to maximize your learning time.

- Mentorship: Participants will have access to experienced CIOs from industry and/or the federal government for ongoing guidance.
- Guest Lectures: Senior federal IT leaders, industry experts, and representatives from oversight bodies will provide insights and dialogue.
- Books & Reading Materials: A selection of books from influential authors will be provided to the participants alongside a curated collection of current articles for review.
- Site Visits: Potential visits to different federal agencies to observe technology implementations and engage in discussions with CIO leadership.
- Focus on Soft Skills: Includes live dedicated workshops with each module on topics such as strategic visioning, leadership communication, stakeholder management, technical communication for business audience, change leadership, vendor negotiation, influence & persuasion, resilience & stress management, mentoring & talent management, emotional intelligence, data driven decision making, and conflict resolution within the unique federal government context.

Is there a discount available for current students?
UMBC students and alumni, as well as students who have previously taken a public training course with UMBC Training Centers are eligible for a 10% discount, capped at $250. Please provide a copy of your UMBC student ID or an unofficial transcript or the name of the UMBC Training Centers course you have completed. Asynchronous courses are excluded from this offer.
What is the cancellation and refund policy?
Student will receive a refund of paid registration fees only if UMBC Training Centers receives a notice of cancellation at least 10 business days prior to the class start date for classes or the exam date for exams.
